Be aware of May 3 march logistics

Are you coming to Albany this Saturday to show support for public education?

Here's what you need to know for a safe, successful - and fun - event.

  • The march is on - rain or shine! Keep an eye on the weather forecast for Albany and dress appropriately.
  • The march is on - budget or no budget! In fact, fast moving developments at the Capitol this week make the timing of the march quite extraordinary. While the Legislature is expected to have the majority of the budget and revenue enhancement bills passed on or about the day of the march - Saturday, May 3 - lawmakers need to be reminded how important these restorations are in order to maintain the courage to override the Governor in the event of vetoes. The best way to show that support is to be in Albany on Saturday. Let your elected officials know that education funding is important this year and every year.
  • No coolers or chairs will be allowed on the Empire State Plaza, due to security restrictions. They might be permitted on buses - ask your organizer to be sure - but will not be allowed on the plaza.
  • If you're driving to Albany you should be aware that many streets will be closed. Map out your parking space as early as possible. There are three parking lots within walking distance at a minimum cost of $5 for the day.
  • Is your group registered? Your group should be registered for the march, whether it's a group of 200 or 2! Registered groups receive important information and materials including driving directions, parking passes and promotional materials. Not sure if your group is on the list? Use this site to make sure your group is registered. If you have questions, contact the march organizers
  • All buses must be registered to receive a parking permit prior to May 3rd. The deadline to register was Tuesday, April 29. Contact the march organizers if you have questions.
  • Entertainment will be provided.
  • Food will be available to purchase.
  • Emergency health care and water will be provided.
  • If you're making your own signs or banners, please keep in mind that for security reasons, signs with poles or sticks will not be allowed on the plaza. March organizers will distribute signs with slogans expressing support for public education on the day of the march.

Keep checking this space for updates on march logistics.
